Overview
Dr. Kathy Giacomini leads research on membrane transporters, focusing on their roles in drug response, human physiology, and disease. Her lab investigates the function of orphan transporters, genetic variation in transporter genes, and how these factors influence drug disposition and efficacy—particularly for treatments related to metabolic syndrome such as metformin and sulfonylureas.
She co-leads the UCSF–Stanford Center of Excellence in Regulatory Sciences and Innovation (CERSI), advancing regulatory science through FDA-funded initiatives in diagnostics, therapeutics, and medical device development.
A committed advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion, Dr. Giacomini supports underrepresented students and postdocs through personalized mentoring, diversity-focused lab meetings, and the CERSI Diversity Scholars Program.
