Goals of the SF BUILD AoC Fellows UCSF Partners Program

  • Match SF State students and recent graduates with UCSF Faculty with community engaged biomedical research projects OR activities that impact community health 
  • Provide professional development for students in biomedical sciences who are engaged in social justice work
  • Connect students to a wider network of professionals and students working to support social justice in biomedical science

How will the AoC Fellows program benefit me in my career?

  • Gain experience in Community Engaged Research or Projects
  • Support your career trajectory in the biomedical field (e.g. Master’s, Ph.D., MD/Ph.D., MD, MPH)
  • Supply financial support for academic and professional development activities
  • Provide networking, peer mentoring, and community building
  • Stipend award variable based on the length of the available project 
    • $1,750/month for Grad and Post Bac Fellows
    • $1,250/month for Undergraduate Fellows
    • Projects can be up to 12 months in length (varies by project)

Program Requirements and Expectations 

  • Attend in-person 1-hour orientation, date to be determined based project start date
  • Create Individualized Development Plan (IDP) with Mentor
  • Submit IDP upon accepting award
  • Submit IDP evaluation at the end of the term
  • Participate in one AoC workshop a semester  
  • Active participation in SF BUILD events and volunteer activities
  • Complete 4 reflections through iLearn  
  • Culminating report back project (ie. final reflections, social media post)
  • Available to commit between 10-20 hours/week on project (time commitment is dependent on each faculty project) 
  • Participate in the SF BUILD Symposium on May 6th at UCSF

Eligibility 

In accordance with Federal and State Law our program does not discriminate on the basis of age, gender, race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, health or disability.

  • Currently enrolled as an undergraduate or master’s student at SFSU, or recently graduated from SFSU within 1 year (September 2024 and after)
  • Intent to pursue graduate or professional school within 1-2 years 
  • Interested in biomedical research relevant to community health
  • Committed to social justice through the use of science  
  • Currently involved in community-engaged biomedical research AND you are not currently funded by other research training programs to complete this work
  • For Renewals, you can only be appointed for a total of 3 terms (Please note that you can not exceed 1 year since graduating for each term you are renewing, September 2024 and after)

Please note: 

1) If you are currently participating in other student research-funded programs, please contact your program director to ensure you are within program guidelines if you are selected as an AoC Fellow. 

2) Additionally, you may need to contact the Financial Aid office to ensure that receiving this award will not exceed your cost of attendance if you have other awards for the academic year.
