My laboratory studies a big family of proteins that are involved in a multitude of different cellular processes ranging from antibiotic resistance to general metabolism and regulation. One challenge to studying these proteins is that they share a conserved protein fold but differ significantly in sequence and function. If you were to join my lab this semester, we would be investigating a group of different crystal structures of some of these proteins and building models of ones we don't have structures for. Ultimately, we want to understand what the different active sites of these proteins look like so we can more fully understand what functions they can perform.
